Do You Really Need a Water Softener in South Florida?

Florida has some of the hardest water in the country. Here's how to decide what system actually fits your home.

A multi-stage RO/DI system β€” aquarium-grade water filtration

Palm Beach County water is safe to drink but extremely hard β€” often 250+ parts per million of dissolved calcium and magnesium. That hardness is what causes white spots on your glassware, soap scum in the shower, and scale buildup inside your water heater. Over time it kills fixtures and cuts years off the life of every appliance that touches water.

The good news: you have options, and you don't always need the most expensive one.

The three levels of water treatment

1. Whole-home carbon filtration ($895–$1,295 installed)

A large carbon filter at your main line that removes chlorine, chloramine, sediment, and bad taste/odor. It does not soften water β€” hardness minerals pass right through. But for chlorine-sensitive skin, reef tanks, and cleaner-tasting water at every tap, it's a cheap win.

Who it's for: Most homes, as a baseline. Aquarium owners (before their RO/DI). Anyone with sensitive skin or allergy concerns.

2. Water softener ($1,495–$2,295 installed)

Uses ion exchange (salt-based) to actually remove calcium and magnesium. This is the only thing that stops scale buildup β€” no "salt-free descaler" product matches the performance, despite what the marketing says. You'll notice softer skin, less soap use, shinier glassware, and a water heater that lasts 50% longer.

Who it's for: Families tired of scale and spots. Anyone with a new water heater they want to protect. Homeowners planning to stay 5+ years β€” payback usually hits in year 3–4.

3. Softener + carbon + RO drinking ($2,495–$3,495 total)

The works: softened water through the whole house, carbon filtration for taste, plus a small under-sink RO unit for pure drinking water and ice. This is what most of our customers end up choosing when we break down cost per year.

Who it's for: Homeowners who want to stop thinking about water forever.

What we recommend

Start with a free water quality test. We come out, test hardness, chlorine, TDS, and pH at your tap, and tell you honestly what the biggest payoff is. Sometimes you only need a softener. Sometimes your water is actually fine and you need better fixtures. Either way, you'll know what you're paying for before we quote a single system.
